What Are the Key Player Retention and Auction Rules?

  • Teams can retain a maximum of 6 players, consisting of up to 5 capped Indian or overseas players, and 2 uncapped Indian players.
  • The 2 uncapped players must come from the IPL 2024 squad and are valued at ₹4 crore each.

Salary Slabs for Retained Players:

  • Retained Player 1: ₹18 crore
  • Retained Player 2: ₹14 crore
  • Retained Player 3: ₹11 crore
  • Retained Player 4: ₹18 crore
  • Retained Player 5: ₹14 crore

The money spent on retention is deducted from a team’s auction purse, which is capped at ₹120 crore. For example, Mumbai Indians have ₹45 crore remaining to spend during the auction.

Right to Match (RTM) Card

  • Teams that have retained 6 players will have no RTM cards available.
  • Teams that have retained no players will have 6 RTM cards.

An RTM card allows a team to match the highest bid for one of their released players. For instance, if Mumbai Indians bids ₹25 crore for Virat Kohli, Royal Challengers Bangalore can use their RTM card to match the bid and retain him. The bidding team can increase their offer, and RCB would need to match it to secure Kohli.

However, a new rule has been introduced for IPL 2025, allowing the bidding team to increase their offer once an RTM card is used, making the process more dynamic compared to previous seasons.
