The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced Gautam Gambhir as Team India’s new head coach on July 9 (Tuesday). Gambhir, a former India batsman, was expected to replace Rahul Dravid as head coach, and the official confirmation was finally made. Gambhir will start his new role with India’s tour of Sri Lanka.
There were earlier reports that salary negotiations were causing delays in the announcement. While Dravid, the previous coach, had an annual salary of Rs 12 crore, Gambhir is expected to earn more.
Salary is not the only benefit of being India’s head coach. In 2019, the BCCI updated its policy, doubling the daily allowance for the coach to $250 (around Rs 21,000) for each day on an away tour. This amount is in addition to business class travel, accommodation, and laundry expenses paid by the BCCI.
Gambhir will also enjoy top-notch travel and accommodation while on duty with the national team. This arrangement ensures that the coaching staff and team have the best possible conditions to perform well under pressure.
