Last month, ESPN Cricinfo reported that Hasaranga had initially suffered a thigh strain, causing him to miss the LPL final and the subsequent Asia Cup 2023.

In a significant setback for Sri Lanka, it appears that Wanindu Hasaranga is set to miss the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. The star all-rounder was sidelined from the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2023 due to an injury he sustained during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023. Unfortunately, during his rehabilitation, Hasaranga suffered a hamstring injury, dashing any hopes of his return for the prestigious tournament in India.

Last month, ESPN Cricinfo reported that Hasaranga had initially suffered a thigh strain, causing him to miss the LPL final and the subsequent Asia Cup 2023. While Sri Lanka had anticipated his return during the Super Four stage of the tournament, it appears that he sustained a hamstring injury during his rehabilitation, effectively ending his comeback prospects.

Wanindu Hasaranga has been a crucial figure in Sri Lanka’s bowling department and has consistently been among their top wicket-takers in ODIs since the 2019 World Cup, with 58 wickets in 39 matches at an impressive strike-rate of 34.8 and an average of 4.84.

He showcased his prowess in the Lanka Premier League, finishing as both the highest run-scorer and highest wicket-taker in the tournament, a remarkable achievement. He scored 279 runs in nine games and took 19 wickets.

Hasaranga had also formed a potent partnership with fellow Sri Lankan Maheesh Theekshana, especially on spin-friendly pitches, adding to Sri Lanka’s bowling strength.

This loss, coupled with the absence of pacer Dushmantha Chameera due to a shoulder injury, presents a significant challenge for Sri Lanka’s bowling attack and could potentially affect their chances in the World Cup. Teams like India and England, with strong bench strength, will pose tough competition.
