The proposal gained immediate approval from the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu. An auction was conducted to determine the owner of the ground, and Visaka Industries Ltd secured the rights with a winning bid of Rs. 65,00,00,000. Initially named after the company, the stadium was later renamed in honor of former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, following a decision by former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

The inaugural match at this stadium took place in 2005, featuring India against South Africa. India has had mixed results at this venue, with 3 losses out of 5 One Day Internationals (ODIs) played here. In Test matches, India has found success, winning 2 out of the 3 games hosted at this stadium.
