Currently recovering from a thigh injury, KL Rahul is expected to assume the role of India’s first-choice wicketkeeper in the ODI World Cup. The right-handed batter is working towards regaining full fitness in time for the Asia Cup 2023, which will serve as preparation for the marquee tournament.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra emphasized KL Rahul’s impressive record in the middle order over the past couple of years, particularly at the No. 5 position. With 742 runs at an average of 53 in 18 innings, Rahul boasts the best numbers in that position for India during this period. Overall, he has amassed 1986 runs at an excellent average of 45.13 in 54 ODIs.

Chopra acknowledged the dilemma faced by Rahul due to his versatility as a top-order batter and wicketkeeper. While many would prefer to open in white-ball cricket, KL Rahul’s ability to keep wickets makes him a valuable asset in the middle order, offering a skill set that others may not possess.

The former opener also highlighted the significance of having a backup option for Rahul, mentioning Sanju Samson as a viable candidate for a similar role in the team. Sanju’s impressive ODI record, with 330 runs in 11 matches at an average of 66 and a strike rate of 104.76, showcases his capabilities as a dependable middle-order batsman who can also keep wickets.

Chopra concluded that Sanju Samson, currently part of the West Indies series, is a natural like-for-like replacement for KL Rahul if the need arises. With his outstanding performances in the limited opportunities he has received, Samson stands as a strong contender to support the team in the middle order and behind the stumps.
