IND vs AUS 3rd Test: Pat Cummins Reveals the Playing XI of Australia

Josh Hazlewood will return to Australia’s XI for the third NRMA Insurance Test against India at the Gabba, replacing Scott Boland. Captain Pat Cummins confirmed the change, acknowledging Boland’s impressive performance in Adelaide but prioritizing Hazlewood’s return. Australia aims to build on their 10-wicket victory in the second Test to level the series 1-1.

Hazlewood’s inclusion comes after overcoming a side strain that ruled him out of the Adelaide Test. Cummins expressed confidence in the pacer’s fitness, noting successful recent practice sessions and assurance from the medical team. He emphasized the importance of managing Hazlewood carefully to avoid aggravating past injuries.

In the second Test, Cummins had restricted Hazlewood’s bowling as a precaution. Reflecting on the decision, he noted it was crucial to prevent a minor soreness from escalating into a prolonged injury. Hazlewood’s workload is now expected to be managed carefully throughout the match.

Scott Boland, who dismissed Virat Kohli in Adelaide and performed admirably in his Test return, makes way despite his strong form. Cummins praised Boland’s efforts and hinted that the veteran pacer could feature again later in the series.

The Gabba pitch has been prepared with caution, given the backlash from last year’s over-watered surface, which led to a two-day Test against South Africa. Groundstaff have aimed for a more balanced wicket for this match.

The Gabba, once a fortress for Australia, has seen mixed results in recent years. While India famously breached it in 2020-21, Australia also faced a defeat to the West Indies last summer. The hosts now aim to regain dominance at the iconic venue.

Australia XI for third Test: Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitch Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins, Mitch Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood
