IND vs AUS 4th Test: Alex Carey credits former Australian greats for his sensational glovework in India

Australian keeper-batter speaks on his conversations with Haddin, Healy, and Gilchrist and reflects on his strategy for scoring runs in the challenging conditions.

Australian cricketer Alex Carey has revealed the secret behind his exceptional glovework during the ongoing Test series in India. The 31-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from South Australia has been seeking advice from former Australian greats such as Brad Haddin, Ian Healy, and Adam Gilchrist, who have all played for Australia.

Carey also credited his former coach Tim Nielsen for helping him stay in the right mindset. Despite playing red-ball cricket in India for the first time, Carey has been sensational behind the stumps, keeping up to three spinners and affecting seven dismissals in three innings.

Speaking to reporters, Carey explained how talking to former Australian greats has helped his glovework, especially on challenging pitches. He said, “Then when you land over here, you get a bit of a feel. As a batting group, we know it’s going to be difficult. We know that the eight-degree ball might not get the wicket, it might be the one that doesn’t spin.” Carey’s instinct to take reviews has also helped Australia multiple times at crucial junctures.

Despite Australia’s crushing defeats in the first two games, the tourists showcased remarkable resilience and won their first game of the series in Nagpur by nine wickets. Carey believes that the team needs to work on giving enough at the tail and try to get 10-15 runs each more.

On his own performance, Carey said that he will stick to his sweeps and reverse sweeps instead of changing his plans drastically. He added that in India, changing one’s method too much can be detrimental to their performance, and he will continue to be positive and back his strength. The fourth Test between India and Australia is set to start in Ahmedabad on Thursday, March 9.
