IND vs AUS 4th Test: Australia’s Todd Murphy earns high praise from Daniel Vettori for taming Virat Kohli in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Assistant coach Vettori hails Murphy's impact on Australia's spin-bowling unit and Lyon's record-breaking performance in Indore, ahead of fourth and final Test in Ahmedabad.

Todd Murphy, the newest addition to the Australian cricket team, has been making waves in the ongoing Test series in India, and his exceptional performance has caught the attention of fans and experts alike. Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori was all praise for the young spinner, who has successfully tamed India’s formidable batter Virat Kohli, a feat that had not been achieved before in Kohli’s Test cricket career.

Virat Kohli getting stumped

Murphy made an instant impact on his Test debut in Nagpur, taking seven wickets in the only innings Australia bowled. Since then, he has notably got Kohli out three times in five innings, and his average in the series has been an impressive 21.81. Speaking to reporters, Vettori lauded Murphy’s ability, and how his dry bowling style allowed the other two spinners to strike in Indore.

The former New Zealand captain highlighted that Murphy has made a smooth transition from first-class to international cricket and has shown exceptional skills and composure, considering his limited experience. “For such a young and inexperienced spinner, who hasn’t played that much first-class cricket, to come here and handle these tough situations and perform the required role has been impressive,” Vettori remarked.

Australia’s three-pronged spin-bowling unit, including Murphy, delivered a sensational performance in Indore, helping the team secure a nine-wicket win. Matthew Kuhnemann claimed five wickets in the first innings, while Nathan Lyon snared eight in the second innings to skittle the opposition for 163.

Vettori also showered praise on Lyon, who achieved a record-breaking haul in Indore, saying that he has marveled at Lyon’s ability to bowl a ball that he couldn’t in his playing days. The fourth and final Test between Australia and India is set to begin in Ahmedabad on March 9, and cricket enthusiasts worldwide are eager to see what Murphy and his teammates have in store.
