After the end of Day 1 in the first Test between India and England, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar raised an interesting question: Who will be the third centurion in this innings? Watching the match at Headingley brought back memories of the famous 2002 Test at the same venue, where Tendulkar, along with Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, scored centuries. That match marked India’s last Test victory at Leeds. So far in this Test, Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill have already scored hundreds, while Rishabh Pant remains unbeaten on 65.

Following the day’s play, Tendulkar wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“A solid foundation laid by KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal has helped India enjoy a good day. Congratulations to Yashasvi and Shubman Gill on their brilliant centuries. Rishabh Pant’s contribution was equally important. India’s batting today reminded me of the 2002 Headingley Test when Rahul, Sourav, and I scored centuries in the first innings and we went on to win the match. Yashasvi and Shubman have done their part—who will score the third century this time?”

In the 2002 Headingley Test, Sachin Tendulkar scored a brilliant 193 batting at number 4. Rahul Dravid, batting at number 3, made 148, and Sourav Ganguly, at number 5, scored 128. India declared their innings at a massive 628/8. England were then bowled out for 273 in their first innings and, after being asked to follow on, were dismissed for 309 in the second. India won the match by an innings and 46 runs.

After being asked to bat first, India got off to a strong start thanks to the opening stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, who added 91 runs for the first wicket. KL Rahul was dismissed for 42 in the 25th over by Brydon Carse. Debutant Sai Sudharsan fell for a duck soon after.

Yashasvi Jaiswal went on to score his 8th Test century, making 101 before Ben Stokes dismissed him. By the end of the day, captain Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 127, while vice-captain Rishabh Pant was on 65. The duo added an unbroken 138-run partnership for the fourth wicket, leaving England on the back foot.
