The highly anticipated Test series between India and England is just around the corner. As the announcement of the Indian squad approaches, fans are eagerly waiting to see which players will make the cut. There’s also keen interest in who will lead the team, especially after Rohit Sharma’s retirement left the captaincy position vacant. Now, just a day before the official squad announcement, some key updates have surfaced.
Shubman Gill Likely to Be Named New Test Captain
Following Rohit Sharma’s retirement, Shubman Gill is almost certain to take over the captaincy. While there are other names in contention, reports suggest that the final decision is likely to favour Gill. According to Cricbuzz, the squad for the England series will be largely similar to the one that toured Australia recently, with the exception of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who won’t be part of the team. So, significant changes are not expected.
Karun Nair Set for a Comeback
One of the surprise names expected to return is Karun Nair. The middle-order batter has been in terrific form in domestic cricket. He scored 863 runs in nine Ranji Trophy matches, including four centuries. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he notched up five centuries in eight innings, scoring a total of 779 runs. The BCCI has already included him in the India A squad for the upcoming two-match series against England Lions, indicating he may also be drafted into the senior team.

Sai Sudharsan Also in Line for Selection
Another name gaining momentum is Sai Sudharsan. Currently playing for Gujarat Titans in the IPL, Sudharsan has already scored over 600 runs this season and is one of the top contenders for the Orange Cap. He is expected to get his maiden call-up to the Test team. Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan also remains in contention for selection. However, Devdutt Padikkal is unlikely to be included this time.
The squad announcement is expected to take place on Saturday, May 24, sometime in the afternoon.
