The first ODI match between India and New Zealand saw two Indian cricketers, Mohammed Siraj and Shubman Gill, surpass certain milestones.
Mohammed Siraj, who has been in outstanding form in the 50-over format, had another impressive performance in the first ODI. He took 4 wickets and conceded just 46 runs from his 10 overs, despite the majority of the Indian bowlers taking a beating.
He dismissed Devon Conway, Tom Latham, Mitchell Santner, and Henry Shipley, keeping India in the game despite Michael Bracewell’s onslaught in Hyderabad.
With this performance, Siraj has become the best bowler in the Indian team in the last few months, surpassing the likes of Amit Mishra, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami. He now has the best bowling average among Indian bowlers who have bowled at least 150 overs in the fifty-over format.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill had an outstanding performance with the bat, breaking Virat Kohli’s world record for the highest ODI score at the age of 23.
Virat Kohli scored 183 off 148 balls against Pakistan in the Asia Cup in 2012. While Shubman Gill scored 208 off 149 balls in the opening match of the three-match series against New Zealand.
In his innings of 208, he slammed 19 fours and 9 sixes in a display of brutal hitting to every corner of the ground. With this performance, Gill now holds the highest ODI score at the age of 23, surpassing Virat Kohli, Quinton de Kock of South Africa, and Paul Stirling of Ireland.
The Indian team went on to win the first match by 12 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the ongoing three-match series against New Zealand.
