India defeated West Indies by 6 wickets in the first ODI played at Ahmedabad in Narendra Modi Stadium. Rohit Sharma made a comeback from his injury, and it was also his first match as full time white ball captain. Rohit grabbed this opportunity and made sure India succeed to have a win in their 1000th ODI match.
Highlights of India Vs West Indies 1st ODI
After winning the toss, Rohit Sharma decided to bowl first and they successfully managed to restrict Caribbean side under 180. Indian spinners – Yuzi Chahal & Washington Sundar dominated the opposition, as they took 7 wickets combined. However, a late fifty by Jason Holder helped West Indies to finish the innings with a score of 176.
India required 177 runs in 50 over at 3.54 runs per over. Rohit and Ishan Kishan opened the innings for India. Rohit seemed set on the crease from ball 1 but Ishan took his time, while Rohit gradually paced the innings for India. Rohit scored a stunning fifty before falling in the trap of Alzarri Joseph, who also took the wicket of Kohli in the same over.
However, two quick wickets were not enough for West Indies considering the runs on board. But India again lost two wickets quicky which was a setback, until Suryakumar Yadav and debutant Deepak Hooda took the team across the finishing line for a win in 28 overs.
Outcomes of Match
1) India bowling was upto the mark after a long time, as they were able to clinch a wicket inside first 10 overs. This was a point of concern since a long time.
2) Indian spinners trapped the Caribbean batters with their fingers magic.
3) Rohit Sharma’s fifty made sure that the batter is 100% fit.
4) Virat Kohli getting dismissed with a careless shot was a point of concern.
5) India losing wickets in bundles has been a headache for a long time now.
Stats Review in the Match
1) Yuzi Chahal reached the milestone of 100 wickets in ODI ( Total- 103 wickets ). He is also the second fastest Indian spinner to do so, after Kuldeep Yadav.
2) Suryakumar Yadav become first Indian to register five 30+ score in his first five ODI innings.
3) Rohit has the highest average (78.57) against a team at home, among batters having minimum 1000 ODI runs.
