The concept of day-night Test matches was introduced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in an effort to make the format more popular. The first-ever day-night Test was played in 2015. Initially, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was hesitant to adopt this format due to concerns about the quality of the pink ball. However, as other countries began to play more day-night Tests, the BCCI started experimenting with the pink ball in domestic tournaments like the Duleep Trophy.
India’s first day-night Test took place in November 2019 against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where they won by an innings and 46 runs. Since then, India has played three more pink-ball Tests. In December 2020, India faced their first away day-night Test in Adelaide against Australia, where they were bowled out for just 36 runs in the second innings, suffering a defeat.
India’s next two pink-ball Tests were victories, beating England by 10 wickets in February 2021 at Ahmedabad and Sri Lanka by 238 runs in March 2022 at Bengaluru.
Notably, India has not won an away pink-ball Test, with their only loss coming against Australia. All their day-night Test victories have been on home soil. India is set to play another day-night Test against Australia in December 2024 at the Adelaide Oval as part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
