Umpiring is the pillar of the cricketing world the player depends on for a fair result and evaluation. Maintaining the profession’s standards is one of the primary duties of the cricketing board worldwide. However, in IPL 2022, BCCI has failed to uphold the level of umpiring expected on the stage of the Indian Premier League.
Many baffling decisions by the umpires in Tata IPL have left fans furious and flabbergasted. These decisions have directly impacted the results on various occasions. The umpires in IPL 2022 are succumbing under pressure and giving many wrong evaluations, which has led to controversial finishes in the tournament.
Here are the instances of IPL 2022 umpiring mistakes:
1- No ball not given against Rovman Powell
Delhi Capitals need all the luck they can get to revive their campaign in the tournament, thanks to a grave umpiring error that caused many controversies. Delhi required more than 30 runs in the last over against Rajasthan Royals, and Rovman Powell smashed 3 consecutive sixes in the final over to magically reduce the equation in Delhi’s favour.
However, the next ball was a waist-high full toss that umpires wrongfully did not give a no-ball. It changed the entire momentum of the game, and Delhi ended up on the losing side. Rishabh Pant and the coaching staff were furious and even asked the players to come back and forfeit the game.
Nevertheless, things were somehow brought under control, and later, fines were imposed on Pant and the coach. But who was actually in the wrong here? This whole scenario could have been avoided if the umpiring standards were up to the task.
2- Umpiring Blinder in RCB vs SRH clash
Recently Royal Challengers Bangalore faced off against Sunrisers Hyderabad. RCB batted first, and between the overs 11th and 12th, the umpires failed to notice that Rajat Patidar had taken a single on the last ball of the 11th over, and he should have been on strike for the first ball in the 12th over.
Much to everyone’s surprise, Faf du Plessis took the strike on the first ball of the 12th over, and the umpires Bruce Oxenford and Nitin Menon were utterly unaware of the situation. Nobody realised the grave mistake until Twitter users pointed it out. This level of negligence is highly unacceptable in the greatest T20 league in the world.
3- Rohit Sharma’s dismissal against KKR
Rohit Sharma is going through a lean patch, and the umpires at IPL 2022 want to extend this phase. In the game against Kolkata Knight Riders, while chasing 166, Rohit was given not out on the last ball of the first over when the ball passed his edge and struck his thigh pad to go straight into the hands of Sheldon Jackson.
The on-field umpire judged it not out, and KKR challenged the decision. Third umpire Bruce Oxenford viewed the whole scenario through DRS and asked the on-field umpire to change his decision. However, what left the fans fuming was even before the ball passed Rohit’s bat, the snickometer was already showing spikes. In such unreliable scenarios, on-field calls should be upheld according to the cricketing laws.
4- Bad Umpiring calls in Prasidh Krishna’s over
In a game between RR and KKR, Prasidh Krishna bowled the 19th over and tried to keep the bowl away from left-handers Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh. The batters jumped outside the off stump to hit the balls, but the standing umpire judged the bowls touching the white lines as wides and no balls. When a batter moves so far across, it has to be taken into consideration while taking such decisions, but the umpire paid no heed to Sanju’s request for the review and continued doing whatever he pleased.
