Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar has praised Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Tushar Deshpande for his remarkable adaptability and improvement this season. Having emerged as one of the most effective death bowlers in the ongoing IPL 2023, Deshpande has risen to the challenge of bowling in high-pressure situations and is now the joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
Gavaskar acknowledged Deshpande’s progress and resilience in overcoming a rocky start to the season. When the youngster made his debut for CSK, he was hit for 51 runs in just 3.2 overs, causing many to question his ability. However, over the course of the tournament, he has shown steady improvement, game by game, and has become a crucial part of CSK’s playoff ambitions this season.

Deshpande’s journey to IPL stardom has not been an easy one. Having played only five matches for Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2020, he was picked up by CSK in 2022 but was not given much game time. However, this season, he has been given ample opportunities to play every match and bowl in the death, showcasing his versatility and effectiveness.

Despite the high-pressure situations that come with bowling in the death overs, Deshpande has maintained a positive body language and continues to pick up crucial wickets for his team. Gavaskar praised Deshpande’s attitude, saying that “not once has he looked down after getting hit for six.”
As the IPL 2023 season progresses, Deshpande will be aiming to clinch the coveted Purple Cap, awarded to the highest wicket-taker in the tournament. But more importantly, he will be focused on contributing to more victories for CSK, as they prepare to face off against Punjab Kings in their next match on April 30th. With Deshpande’s emergence as a death bowling specialist, CSK will undoubtedly be looking to him to deliver yet another impressive performance on the field.
