How to calculate ‘Net Run-Rate’?

To calculate the net-run rate, a team’s batting run rate is subtracted from the team’s bowling run rate. Suppose in IPL itself, a team scored 200 runs in 20 overs and then while bowling gave only 140 runs in 20 overs, then its net run rate would be 3. Since the team scored 200 runs in 20 overs, the batting run rate will be 10. At the same time, due to spending 140 runs, his bowling run rate will be 7. Means by minus 7 out of 10, the net run-rate will come out.

Even if a team gets all out before the scheduled overs, the net run rate will be calculated on the basis of its scheduled overs only. For example, if RCB’s team is reduced to 90 runs in 18 overs, its batting run rate will be considered as 4.50 (90 runs/20 = 4.50).

What will happen if the DLS Method is applied?

If a match is interrupted by rain or any other reason, then the net run-rate will be determined on the basis of par score (score determined after applying DLS) and not on actual score. For example, if team Punjab Kings scores 200 runs in 20 overs and due to rain, the target for RCB is reduced to 170 runs in 16 overs, then the net run rate is also determined on the basis of runs scored in 16 overs.

If the team batting first plays the entire over, but the second batting team is all out for a low score, then it can get the advantage of playing the entire over in net-run rate. The net-run rate keeps on increasing, decreasing with each match throughout the tournament. If a team played well in the first match and played poorly in the second match, then there would be a difference in its net-run rate in the tournament.
