IPL 2023: Kevin Pietersen Expresses His Wish for MS Dhoni to Play IPL for another Decade after Chepauk Crowd’s Warm Welcome

Former England Cricketer Kevin Pietersen Expresses His Admiration for Mahendra Singh Dhoni's Leadership Skills and Impact Player Abilities

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has joined the chorus of voices calling for the continuation of MS Dhoni’s career in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Pietersen made his wishes known after the Chennai Super Kings’ final home game in the group stages of IPL 2023 against the Kolkata Knight Riders on May 14, during which the fans at the Chepauk Stadium gave their captain a rousing welcome.

MS Dhoni

The atmosphere in Chennai during the home games of the Chennai Super Kings has been electric, with rumours of Dhoni’s impending retirement adding to the anticipation. Fans of the World Cup-winning former India skipper have been flocking to the stadium, carrying banners and placards to show their support.

When Dhoni’s face appeared on the big screen during the Super Kings innings’ 19th over, the crowd erupted in excitement and anticipation. The mere sight of their captain preparing to take to the field was enough to raise the decibel levels at Chepauk.

And when Dhoni finally stepped out to bat, the cheers were deafening. Despite only scoring two runs off the last five balls of the innings, Dhoni’s every move was met with thunderous applause from the fans.

Pietersen was present at the stadium and witnessed the Dhoni frenzy firsthand. “With the Impact Player rule, 10 years is left in him. He can keep (wickets). He is fit enough to keep. Doesn’t bat a lot, but hits a couple of sixes. Marshals his troops so beautifully,” Pietersen said on-air during Chennai’s innings.

The Impact Player rule allows teams to retain one player above the salary cap, and Dhoni has been Chennai’s Impact Player for several seasons now. His ability to lead the team, keep wickets, and occasionally hit a crucial six has made him an invaluable asset to the team.

Pietersen’s wish for Dhoni to continue playing in the IPL for another decade may seem like a tall order, but it’s not impossible. Dhoni is known for his supreme fitness and discipline, and he has already shown that age is just a number by leading Chennai Super Kings to the playoffs once again.

MSD

As the Chennai Super Kings players prepare to perform a special lap of honour around Chepauk to thank their fans for their support over the seven home games, it’s clear that MS Dhoni’s contribution to the team and to Indian cricket as a whole will be remembered for years to come.
