IPL 2023: Virender Sehwag Reveals Eye-Opening Interaction with Prithvi Shaw, saying “If You Want to Talk, You Have to Take the Initiative”

Former Indian Opener Highlights the Need for Players to Initiate Conversations and Prioritize Mental Fitness for Success

In a candid revelation, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag shed light on his recent interaction with Prithvi Shaw and shared valuable insights into the significance of communication and mental fitness in the game. Sehwag disclosed that during a six-hour ad shoot, he and Shaw didn’t discuss cricket, highlighting the need for proactive engagement among players.

Prithvi Shaw

Prithvi Shaw’s journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 commenced on a lackluster note, leading to his exclusion from the playing XI. The talented right-handed batsman struggled, scoring a mere 47 runs in his first six matches, with an average of 7.83 and a strike rate of 117.5. However, he made a noteworthy comeback against the Punjab Kings, smashing a crucial half-century of 54 runs in 38 balls.

Recalling his own experience, Sehwag emphasized the importance of initiating conversations with senior players, citing an interaction he had with the legendary Sunil Gavaskar during the 2003-2004 season. Sehwag recounted how he expressed his desire to meet Gavaskar to coach John Wright, ultimately organizing a dinner where they could discuss batting techniques. Sehwag stressed that players must make an effort to approach experienced cricketers and seek guidance, as legends like Gavaskar won’t naturally initiate such interactions.

Sehwag further highlighted the significance of being in a positive mental state to achieve desired results. He suggested that Shaw seek assistance from the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Delhi Capitals (DC), the team he represents, in order to optimize his mental well-being. Sehwag emphasized that players need to proactively request support and engage in constructive conversations to enhance their performance.

The former Indian opener underscored that talent alone is insufficient without a sound mental framework. To unlock their full potential, players must focus on mental fitness and actively engage with experienced individuals who can offer guidance. Sehwag concluded by encouraging Shaw to approach the COO of DC or any relevant authority within the team, expressing confidence that someone would be willing to help.

Virender Sehwag’s insights serve as a valuable reminder to all cricketers about the critical role communication and mental fitness play in shaping their careers. By taking the initiative to connect with senior players and seeking support from team authorities, players can establish a conducive environment for personal growth, paving the way for enhanced performance and success on the field.
