There is a high possibility of rain during the match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for rain in Mumbai. The rain probability on the match day is around 80%, which puts the game at serious risk of being abandoned. Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced a new rule allowing an additional one hour of waiting time in case of rain delays. This means play can be delayed up to an hour more than usual before a match is called off.
This match is crucial for both teams as they are still in the race for the playoffs. If Mumbai Indians manage to win, they will directly qualify for the playoffs, ending Delhi Capitals’ campaign. However, if the match is washed out due to rain, the playoff equation could change drastically. Currently, Mumbai have 14 points from 12 matches, while Delhi have 13 points from the same number of games.
If the Match Is Abandoned – Points Will Be Shared
If the match scheduled at Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday gets abandoned due to rain, both teams will be awarded one point each. In that case, Mumbai will have 15 points and Delhi 14. Delhi will then have to win their final league match and hope that Punjab Kings defeat Mumbai Indians. If that happens, Mumbai will remain at 15 points, and Delhi, with 16, will become the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs.
On the other hand, if the match is abandoned, Mumbai will have no choice but to win their final match against Punjab to reach 17 points and seal a playoff spot. In that scenario, even a big win for Delhi over Punjab won’t help them qualify.
The good news is that rain chances decrease to around 50% in the evening, and skies are expected to clear as the day progresses. However, it will depend on how quickly the ground staff can prepare the pitch and outfield for play. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal has requested the BCCI to consider shifting the match to another city due to the weather forecast.

New IPL Rule
On Tuesday, IPL authorities announced a new rule stating that matches from May 20 onwards — including remaining group-stage games and playoffs — will have an extra hour available to complete the match in case of rain delays. This extends the cut-off time for starting a minimum 5-over game to 11:56 PM, whereas it was earlier 10:56 PM. This rule is designed to ensure more chances of results even under adverse weather conditions.
