The IPL 2025 match between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians will be played on Monday. Looking at the head-to-head record, Mumbai has the upper hand, but they have lost both their opening matches this season, giving KKR a psychological advantage. KKR started the 18th season of IPL with a loss against RCB but bounced back with a win over Rajasthan Royals in their last match.
Head-to-Head Record
KKR will try to maintain their momentum against Mumbai Indians. On the other hand, if Mumbai fails to make a comeback, they will suffer a hat-trick of losses. So far, KKR and Mumbai have faced each other 34 times in IPL, with five-time champions Mumbai winning 23 matches, while Kolkata has won only 11. Although Mumbai has dominated the head-to-head record, KKR’s recent performances have been impressive.
Mumbai Indians’ Struggles
Starting an IPL season with consecutive losses is not new for Mumbai Indians. So far, they have suffered defeats against Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans. Mumbai is known for slow starts but uniting as a team to win the trophy. However, to get their campaign back on track, Mumbai needs better performances from their bowlers and more consistency from their batsmen, especially since they lack a specialist finisher in the lower order.

Rohit Sharma’s Form a Concern
Former captain Rohit Sharma’s form is a major concern for Mumbai. He has not been able to perform well with the bat, while aggressive batsman Ryan Rickelton is also struggling to find rhythm on Indian pitches in his first IPL season. The South African batter has shown glimpses of his talent but has not delivered consistently. Rohit, on the other hand, has failed to reach double digits in both matches, even getting out for a duck once. Suryakumar Yadav seemed to be regaining form with a 48-run knock against the Titans, but it wasn’t the kind of innings expected from India’s T20 captain.
Captain Hardik Pandya, after consistent success on a personal level, will return to Wankhede Stadium with renewed energy, where last year, fans were entirely against him for replacing Rohit as captain. The absence of Jasprit Bumrah means Mumbai Indians won’t be able to pair left-arm pacers Trent Boult and Reece Topley with the new ball. Instead, Deepak Chahar is expected to share the pace attack with the experienced New Zealand bowler.
Narine’s Availability Depends on Fitness
KKR’s experienced all-rounder Sunil Narine’s participation in this match depends on his fitness. He missed the last game against Rajasthan due to illness. However, Narine trained on Saturday, indicating recovery, and his potential return would be a big boost for KKR, given his crucial role in their three IPL title wins. Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora, along with Australia’s left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson, form a strong new-ball attack for KKR, but their real strength lies in their spin duo of Narine and Varun Chakravarthy.
Under Ajinkya Rahane’s leadership, KKR has a well-balanced squad. With Narine unavailable in the last game, Moeen Ali opened alongside Quinton de Kock. The middle order features Rahane, Venkatesh Iyer, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi. With Rinku Singh and Andre Russell in the lineup, KKR has explosive finishers for the death overs, while their bowling attack remains equally impressive.
Predicted Playing XI for MI vs KKR:
Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Will Jacks, Hardik Pandya (c), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Vignesh Puthur.
