The fate of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to be hosted by Pakistan, remains uncertain as the ICC Board meets today to make a critical decision. With India refusing to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns, the tournament’s schedule and venue are in jeopardy. The political unrest in Pakistan, highlighted by recent violent protests in Islamabad, has further raised questions about the country’s ability to host international cricket.
Three key scenarios are under consideration: a hybrid model where matches are split between Pakistan and a neutral venue like the UAE, hosting India’s matches in Pakistan (including the final if necessary), or relocating the entire tournament. The hybrid model, previously used during the 2023 Asia Cup, seems the most feasible, but it requires Pakistan’s acceptance amidst mounting financial and logistical concerns.
The PCB has taken a firm stance against the hybrid model, citing readiness to host all games in Pakistan and providing security assurances. However, backchannel talks have urged Pakistan to reconsider, emphasizing the financial losses and long-term consequences of failing to compromise. The PCB risks losing the USD 65 million hosting fee and future ICC tournament opportunities if the tournament is moved elsewhere.

Pakistan’s financial dependency on ICC revenue, amounting to USD 35 million annually, makes compromise likely. Hosting the Champions Trophy could boost Pakistan’s credibility as an international cricket destination, while refusing to adapt may result in further isolation. The ICC may also offer increased hosting fees under a hybrid model to incentivize agreement.
A tournament without India is commercially unviable, as 80-90% of ICC’s revenue comes from India. India’s participation is crucial for sponsorship, viewership, and overall success. With the ICC Board’s decision imminent, Pakistan faces growing pressure to adopt the hybrid model to secure its hosting rights and safeguard its cricketing future.
