Prithvi Shaw’s Former Coach Explains Why the Star Opener Went Unsold at IPL 2025 Mega Auction

Prithvi Shaw led India to victory in the U-19 World Cup in January 2018, and that same year, he was picked by the Delhi Capitals for the IPL. The right-handed batter from Mumbai made his IPL debut against Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, scoring 22 runs off 10 balls. In the next match, against Kolkata Knight Riders at the same venue, the 18-year-old Shaw hit 62 runs from just 44 balls. This performance earned him a regular spot in DC’s playing XI, and he was retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Over the next seven seasons, Shaw played 79 matches for DC, amassing 1,892 runs. However, he was not retained ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, and during the two-day auction in Jeddah on November 24-25, he went unsold. His failure to attract bids shocked many former players and experts.

Shaw’s former coach, Jawala Singh why Shaw failed to find a buyer. According to Singh, Shaw’s inconsistency with his performances was a major factor.

“Prithvi came to me in 2015, and I worked with him for three years. At that time, he hadn’t played in the Mumbai Under-16 team, and his father asked me to guide him. The next year, he played the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy and performed well in selection matches. I worked hard with him, and he was talented from the start.

I won’t take all the credit because many coaches contributed to his development, but back then, I was the one working with him. I was thrilled when he played in the Under-19 World Cup because he was my first student to do so. Before leaving for the tournament, he celebrated his birthday with me. Since then, I haven’t seen him; that was in 2017, and now it’s 2024. He hasn’t come to me since,” Singh shared.
