Ranji Trophy: Neither Rohit Nor Yashasvi Shined, Struggled Against Jammu & Kashmir

Rohit Sharma has been struggling in red-ball cricket for a while now. In his last 15 Test innings, he has managed to score only 164 runs at a poor average of 10.93. After disappointing performances against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia, questions were raised about his place in the team. In an attempt to regain his form, the Indian captain turned to domestic cricket. After almost 10 years, he played a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai against Jammu & Kashmir on Thursday, January 23. However, his struggle continued as he was dismissed for just 3 runs off 19 balls.

Rohit Struggles Against Jammu & Kashmir Bowlers

Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and opted to bat first. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings for Mumbai. However, Jammu & Kashmir’s bowlers troubled them from the start. Especially, 6 feet 4-inch tall pacer Umar Nazir gave Rohit a tough time. The Indian captain struggled to read his deliveries and was beaten multiple times. Umar bowled 12 consecutive dot balls to Rohit before finally dismissing him on the 13th delivery.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was in good form and had performed well in Australia, also failed in this match. He had scored 391 runs in the five-match Test series against Australia at an average of 43, including two fifties and a century. He started confidently in this game, hitting a boundary on the second ball of his innings, but was dismissed for just 4 runs off 8 balls.

Rohit Sharma’s Test Career Under Threat

With his poor batting form, Rohit Sharma’s place in the Test team is in danger. He had a disappointing series in Australia, scoring just 31 runs in five innings at an average of 6.2. India is set to tour England in June for a five-match Test series, and Rohit’s selection will largely depend on his domestic performance. If he fails to deliver, this could mark the end of his Test career.
