Ravichandran Ashwin Test Career

In November 2011, during West Indies’ tour of India for three Tests and five ODIs, Ashwin and Ojha were the only two specialist spinners in the squad. Ashwin made his Test debut in the first match at Delhi, receiving his cap from Sachin Tendulkar. He made an immediate impact, taking 3/81 in the first innings and a fifer with 6/47 in the second, earning the man of the match award and becoming the third Indian player to achieve this feat on Test debut. He continued his impressive performance, picking four wickets in the second Test at Kolkata and contributing with both bat and ball in the third Test at Mumbai, where he scored his maiden international century and took 5/156. This outstanding all-round display earned him the man of the match and man of the series awards.

Ashwin’s form continued in subsequent matches. He played a crucial role in the two-match home Test series against New Zealand, where he claimed match figures of 12/85 in the first Test at Hyderabad and 5/69 in the second Test at Bangalore, leading India to victory and earning the man of the series award. In the 2012 ICC World Twenty20, he took five wickets at an economy rate of 6 and an average of 19.

During England’s tour of India in late 2012, Ashwin became the fastest Indian to record 50 Test wickets, achieving the milestone in his ninth game. Despite India’s series loss, Ashwin stood out with both bat and ball, scoring 243 runs and taking 14 wickets. He continued his impressive form in subsequent series, including a successful tour of Australia in 2012-13, where he finished as the leading wicket-taker with 29 wickets at an average of 20.10 and won the Man of the Series award.

Ashwin’s performances earned him accolades such as the ICC Cricketer of the Year and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year in 2016. He continued to excel in Test cricket, including standout performances against South Africa, England, and Australia. He reached the milestone of 400 Test wickets during England’s tour of India in 2021 and played a key role in India’s series victory against Australia in March 2023.

Born on September 17, 1986, in Madras, Tamil Nadu, Ravichandran Ashwin is the son of Ravichandran and Chitra. His father, Ravichandran, was a club-level cricketer known for his prowess as a fast bowler. Ashwin received his education at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. He pursued a BTech in Information Technology from SSN College of Engineering, Chennai.

Initially, Ashwin began his cricket journey as an opening batsman before transitioning to medium pace bowling. Eventually, he found his calling as an off-spin bowler, a decision that would pave the way for his successful career in cricket.

Ravichandran Ashwin Domestic & County Career

Ashwin has been a stalwart for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, representing the team in multiple seasons of the Ranji Trophy. He notably captained the Tamil Nadu team to victory in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2008-09 and led them to the semi-finals in 2015. Additionally, he played a vital role in the team’s success in reaching the tournament in 2019. Ashwin has also showcased his talents for the South Zone team.

In 2018, Ashwin captained the India A side in the Deodhar Trophy, demonstrating his leadership abilities. He has been an integral part of the TNCA first division league, initially playing for Chemplast until 2018 when he transferred to Mylapore RC. In 2020, he signed on to represent India Cements.

Ashwin expanded his cricketing horizons by making his English county debut with Worcestershire in August 2017, where he impressed with his performance, claiming three wickets against Gloucestershire. He returned to play for Worcestershire in the 2018 season before joining Nottinghamshire for the second half of the 2019 County Championship season. Ashwin made a significant impact for Nottinghamshire, contributing with both bat and ball, claiming 34 wickets and scoring 339 runs in five matches.
