Washington Sundar Test Debut

Initially selected as a net bowler for India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia, Washington Sundar unexpectedly earned his maiden Test cap due to a string of injuries to fellow bowlers. Quarantine restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic prevented India from flying in replacements, opening the door for Sundar. On January 15, he made his Test debut in the final match of the series at The Gabba.

Sundar made an immediate impact, claiming the prized wicket of Steve Smith with his first Test delivery. He showcased his batting prowess as well, scoring 62 runs in his debut Test innings, forming a crucial seventh-wicket partnership of 123 runs with Shardul Thakur. With his debut fifty, Sundar joined an elite group as only the third Indian to achieve the milestone on Test debut in Australia.
