India’s young sensation, Shubman Gill, made history on Wednesday as he recorded the highest T20 score by an Indian batter in a thrilling 2-1 series victory over New Zealand.
In a historic performance that solidified his status as a rising star in the Indian cricket world, Shubman Gill thrilled fans with his maiden T20I hundred against New Zealand in the final match of the series. With a knock of 126 not out off 63 balls, including a flurry of 12 fours and 7 sixes, Gill not only broke Virat Kohli’s previous record of 122 not out, but also became the youngest player in history to register a century in all three formats.
Batting first, India lost Ishan Kishan early on, but Rahul Tripathi quickly set the tempo with 44 runs off 22 balls, igniting the Indian batting lineup. Tripathi and Gill then combined for an 80-run partnership off 42 balls, with Gill reaching his half-century off 35 balls.
Gill’s incredible performance was matched by Hardik Pandya, who contributed 30 runs off 17 balls, as the pair amassed 103 runs in just 40 balls for the fourth wicket. This helped India reach its fifth-highest T20 total, and secure a commanding 168-run victory over the New Zealand side. The Kiwis were unable to keep up, collapsing to 66 all out in just 12.1 overs, their third-lowest T20I total ever.
“I’m happy that my hard work in practice is paying off,” Gill exclaimed. “It was my dream to play for India and I am grateful to be part of the team in all three formats.” He added in a post match interview.
Gill’s remarkable innings saw him surpass the previous record held by former Indian captain, Virat Kohli, and join an elite club of Indian batters who have scored a century in all three formats, including Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Kohli himself.
Fans and cricket enthusiasts alike couldn’t stop praising the rising star for his incredible feat, solidifying Shubman Gill’s place as one of India’s most promising young talents.
With his standout performance, Shubman Gill has firmly cemented his place in Indian cricket history and has fans eagerly anticipating his next appearance on the field.
