Rohit Sharma, the Indian opener and captain, achieved two significant milestones during the first ODI match between India and New Zealand.
In the match, Rohit Sharma and his opening partner Shubman Gill got off to a fast start, scoring 60 runs in 12 overs. Sharma was dismissed for 34 runs off 38 balls, hitting 4 fours and 2 sixes.
Despite his short innings, Sharma accomplished two notable achievements. Firstly, he broke MS Dhoni’s record for the most sixes in India. With 2 sixes in this match, Sharma now has 125 sixes in India, two more than MS Dhoni.
Secondly, Sharma overtook Australian legend Adam Gilchrist’s run tally in ODIs. After this innings, Sharma has scored 9630 runs in 239 innings, with 27 hundreds and 47 fifties. In comparison, Gilchrist has 9619 runs in 287 innings, which includes 16 centuries and 55 half-centuries.
In the upcoming matches, Sharma will now look to become the 6th Indian after Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli to score 10,000 ODI runs.
The opener has also changed his approach since opening the innings with Shubman Gill. In the last four innings, the duo has three fifty-plus opening innings to their name.
