Rohit Sharma to Captain in Test Series on England Tour? Champions Trophy Win Could Bring Reward

Rohit Sharma is expected to be selected as captain for the five-match Test series against England in June following India’s victory in the Champions Trophy. According to a report by The Indian Express, Rohit could lead the team on this tour. Before the Champions Trophy, Rohit was going through a rough patch, and his performance in the Test series against Australia was not impressive.

Two ICC Trophies Under Rohit’s Leadership

Rohit was left out of the fifth Test match against Australia in Sydney during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, raising questions about his future in the format. However, under his captaincy, India recently defeated New Zealand to win the Champions Trophy, marking their second ICC title in the past nine months. Earlier in 2024, India also won the T20 World Cup under Rohit’s leadership. Reports suggest that Rohit may be rewarded for his Champions Trophy success by being given the captaincy for the England tour.

BCCI’s Support for Rohit

According to the report, Rohit has the backing of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selection committee to lead the team on this tour. A source quoted in the report stated, “Rohit has proven what he is capable of. Everyone believes he is the most suitable choice to lead India on the England tour.” Rohit has also expressed his desire to continue playing red-ball cricket.

I cannot comment on 2027 as it is still far away, but I am keeping my options open.”
