Saqib Mahmood made his debut for England in T20Is against New Zealand in November 2019 and in ODIs against South Africa in February 2020. He was later called up for Test cricket and made his debut in March 2022 against the West Indies. However, injuries, including back stress fractures, kept him out of the game for most of 2022 and 2023, making it difficult for him to secure a regular spot in the England team.

In November 2024, Mahmood shone in England’s T20I series against the West Indies, taking nine wickets and winning the Player of the Series award. He set a new England record for most powerplay wickets in a T20I series. In early 2025, he faced visa delays for the India tour due to his Pakistani heritage but was eventually cleared. On 31 January 2025, he took a brilliant triple-wicket maiden over against India, dismissing Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Suryakumar Yadav in six balls.
