In a surprising turn of events in cricket, the captain of the Bangladesh ODI team has made a sudden decision to retire from international cricket. This announcement comes shortly after Bangladesh’s unexpected loss to Afghanistan in a rain-affected match. With the ODI World Cup only three months away, Bangladesh now faces the task of finding a new captain. Tamim, visibly emotional, revealed his retirement during a press conference.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has not yet disclosed the name of Tamim’s successor in the 50-over format. There is a strong possibility that either Shakib Al Hasan or Litton Das will be chosen for the role. Shakib is already leading the Bangladesh team in the T20I format, while Litton serves as the Test captain.
Around the same period last year, Tamim had already announced his retirement from T20Is. His final appearance in a Test match for Bangladesh took place in April, against Ireland.
When Tamim made his debut in ODIs in February 2007, he was just a teenager. His first match coincided with Bangladesh’s memorable victory over India in the World Cup held in the West Indies. Tamim contributed to the win by scoring a fifty in that game.
Tamim, as he retires, holds the record for the highest number of runs (8313) and centuries (14) in the ODI format for the Bangladesh team. Among currently active cricketers, he ranks third in terms of runs scored in one-day cricket, with only Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma ahead of him.
In Test cricket, Tamim concludes his career with an impressive tally of over 5000 runs, including 10 centuries and 31 half-centuries. In T20Is, he has accumulated 1758 runs, featuring one century and seven half-centuries.
Tamim will be remembered as a legendary figure in the history of Bangladesh cricket.
