Shreyas Iyer, a key batsman for Team India, is facing challenges in his recovery process after undergoing back surgery to address a persistent injury. This situation has raised concerns about his availability for the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup, scheduled for October-November.
Iyer had been grappling with a back problem for a considerable period of time before opting for surgery, similar to his teammate Jasprit Bumrah. The middle-order batsman was unable to participate in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar series in February and was subsequently ruled out of the following ODI series, as well as the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season where he was set to represent the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Positive news surrounds the recovery of KL Rahul from his injury, and it is expected that he will make a comeback during the 2023 Asia Cup, which is scheduled for August-September. The wicket-keeper batsman holds significant importance in Team India’s strategy for the World Cup, especially considering that Rishabh Pant appears to be unlikely to be in contention.

Shreyas Iyer has played a vital role as the No. 4 batsman in Team India’s ODI lineup, consistently delivering strong performances whenever given the opportunity. However, with his absence due to injury, the team management is contemplating the promotion of either Suryakumar Yadav or Sanju Samson to fill the crucial batting position. Both Yadav and Samson are integral to the team’s plans for the ODIs and have also been included in the ODI squad for the upcoming series against the West Indies.
