Jos Buttler was acquired by Gujarat Titans for ₹15.75 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah on Sunday.
The bidding for Buttler started with his former team, Rajasthan Royals, before Lucknow Super Giants joined in. However, Gujarat Titans successfully outbid their rivals to secure the England star.
Parthiv Patel, Gujarat Titans’ batting and assistant coach, expressed his delight, saying: “We’re thrilled to have Jos Buttler in our team. He’s versatile, capable of batting anywhere, keeping wicket, and even supporting Shubman (Gill). We aimed to sign our top bowler and top batter from the marquee set, and we’ve got both.”
Buttler was released by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the auction, having been part of the franchise since 2018. Prior to that, he played two seasons with Mumbai Indians.
In his 107 IPL appearances, Buttler has scored 3,582 runs at an average of 38.10, with seven centuries—second only to Virat Kohli (8)—and 19 fifties. He made history in the 2022 season by winning the Orange Cap with 862 runs in 17 matches, becoming the first player to win it twice.
Though 34 years old and recovering from a calf injury, Buttler showcased his batting skills with a blazing 83 in his second T20I back for England against the West Indies, batting at No. 3. Since joining Rajasthan Royals, he has primarily opened the batting.
A T20 World Cup-winning captain, Buttler also brings strong leadership qualities to any team.
Ahead of the highly anticipated 2025 IPL season, several high-profile overseas players have been surprisingly released by their franchises, making them available for the upcoming mega auction. This development includes some of the biggest names in T20 cricket, setting the stage for an exciting auction as teams look to revamp their squads. Here’s a look at seven marquee overseas players who are now on the market:
Jos Buttler: The explosive England white-ball captain has been a cornerstone for the Rajasthan Royals in recent seasons. Renowned for his match-winning abilities at the top of the order, Buttler’s release is shocking, especially considering his impressive form in the IPL. He played a vital role in securing crucial wins for RR, consistently scoring heavily and setting challenging targets for opponents.
Glenn Maxwell: The hard-hitting all-rounder from Australia has also been released by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Known for his flamboyant batting style and knack for taking quick wickets, Maxwell was a key player for RCB, particularly in accelerating scoring during the middle overs while providing handy off-spin. His departure indicates a strategic shift for RCB as they prepare for the new season.
Faf du Plessis: The veteran South African and former RCB captain has been let go, marking the end of an era for the franchise. Du Plessis was celebrated for his steady batting and inspirational leadership, guiding the team through intense matches. His experience and composure could greatly benefit any team willing to invest in a seasoned top-order batsman.
Mitchell Starc: The Australian pace spearhead has been released by Kolkata Knight Riders. Known for his blazing speed and precision, Starc is a proven match-winner and one of the top fast bowlers in the world. His exit raises questions about KKR’s pace lineup and the kind of bowling attack they will seek to assemble in the auction.
Phil Salt: The English wicketkeeper-batter, recognized for his aggressive batting style, is another player heading to the auction after being released by KKR. Salt, who can play as a dynamic opener and competent wicketkeeper, is likely to attract bids from teams looking for a versatile player capable of increasing the scoring rate.
Quinton de Kock: The aggressive left-handed opener from South Africa has been let go by Lucknow Super Giants. De Kock was known for his consistency and match-winning potential, providing explosive starts for LSG. His release will prompt teams in search of a quality opener who can take on bowlers right from the outset to keep a close eye on him in the auction.
Trent Boult: The Kiwi pacer, celebrated for his lethal swing bowling, has also parted ways with Rajasthan Royals. Boult, who contributed experience and reliability to RR’s bowling unit, has frequently delivered crucial breakthroughs during powerplay overs. His availability in the mega auction is expected to draw interest from multiple franchises looking to bolster their new-ball attack.
The match 38 of the TATA IPL 2024 will witness clash between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Mumbai Indians (MI). The match is scheduled to take place on Monday, April 22 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. RR with 12 points is on the 1st position. While MI with 3 wins and 4 defeats in the IPL 2024 is on the 7th position.
Sanju Samson is the skipper of RR, while Hardik Pandya is captaining MI. Mumbai has dominated Mumbai in the head to head encounters with 15 victories in 29 matches. In this article, we will take a look at the 3 key player battles to watch out for in the match 38 of the TATA IPL 2024 between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians.
Here are the three key player battles to watch out for during the RR vs MI match:
1) Rohit Sharma vs Trent Boult
Rohit Sharma vs Trent Boult is one of the biggest battle in the RR vs MI clash. Rohit is in great form and is among the highest run-scorers for the Mumbai Indians this season. But he got out on a duck when he last faced Trent Boult earlier this season. The pacer has dismissed the batter 2 times in the IPL. Rohit has faced 18 balls from Boult and scored 17 runs off it.
2) Jos Buttler vs Jasprit Bumrah
Jos Buttler is in insane form and has struck two hundreds in the last four games that he played including an unbelievable win against KKR that he pulled off at the Eden Gardens. If MI needs to win this match, then Buttler’s wicket will be a very crucial. Therefore, Jasprit Bumrah will be called up to get rid of Jos, as he has already dismissed the batter twice.
3) Ishan Kishan vs Ravi Ashwin
Ishan Kishan is having a good season and has been able to give quick starts to the Mumbai Indians. It will be very difficult to stop him once he gets going. But Rajasthan Royals has Ravi Ashwin, who is known for his controlled spin bowling. Ashwin has bowled 63 balls to Ishan by giving away 57 runs, and dismissed the batter once in the IPL.
The match 14 of the TATA IPL 2024 will witness clash between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). The match is scheduled to take place on Monday, April 1 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Both teams have 2 points on the points table. Hardik Pandya is the skipper of MI, while Sanju Samson is captaining RR.
RR is favourite to win this encounter against MI. Both teams have played 28 matches, with Rajasthan winning 12 games and Mumbai winning 15 games so far in the head to head encounters. In this article, we will take a look at the 3 key player battles to watch out for in the match 14 of the TATA IPL 2024 between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals.
Here are the three key player battles to watch out for during the MI vs RR match:
1) Sanju Samson vs Piyush Chawla
Sanju Samson is one of the best batters. But this time around, he will be challenged by an experienced spinner like Piyush Chawla, who has been bowling since the inaugural season of the IPL. Samson is looking in good form. However, Chawla knows how to stop him. This battle between the two Indians will be interesting in the middle overs phase.
2) Trent Boult vs Rohit Sharma
Trent Boult vs Rohit Sharma is the biggest battle in the upcoming match between Indians and Royals. Boult will be ready with his speed and swing, and on the other hand Rohit will be looking to smash and time the ball. Both have faced each other in 13 innings, out of which Boult has dismissed Rohit four times, while Rohit has scored 52 runs against Boult.
3) Jos Buttler vs Jasprit Bumrah
Another key battle in today’s match will be between RR batter Jos Buttler and MI pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Both are match-winners for their respective teams and knows how to handle the pressure very well. Bumrah has dismissed Buttler four times in ten innings, while the batter has scored 59 runs against the bowler.
With the IPL 2024 starting from March 22, veteran Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has made a bold prediction regarding the coveted Orange Cap, which is awarded to the tournament’s highest run-scorer. In a recent video on his YouTube channel ‘JokerKiHaveli,’ Chahal, known for his witty banter, humorously picked himself initially but later suggested that his Rajasthan Royals teammates Jos Buttler or Yashasvi Jaiswal could clinch the prestigious award.
During an interaction with Esports streamer Gulrez Khan, Chahal jovially selected himself as the top run-scorer before settling on Buttler or Jaiswal as his serious prediction. “Orange cap will go to (Yashasvi) Jaiswal or Jos Buttler,” remarked Chahal, indicating his faith in the batting prowess of his Rajasthan Royals colleagues.
Chahal also made predictions for the leading wicket-takers, confidently naming himself for the top spot and choosing Gujarat Titans spinner Rashid Khan for the second position. His lighthearted yet insightful predictions have sparked curiosity among fans ahead of the upcoming IPL season.
Meanwhile, former India opener Aakash Chopra expressed surprise over Chahal’s exclusion from the BCCI’s central contracts. Chopra noted that while the omission of players like Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shikhar Dhawan could be understood, Chahal’s absence signifies a potential shift in the selection committee’s strategy.
Chopra speculated that Chahal’s exclusion indicates the BCCI’s exploration of alternative options, signaling a significant development in the veteran spinner’s career trajectory. Despite Chahal’s consistent performances in the IPL and international cricket, his absence from the centrally-contracted players’ list raises questions about the selectors’ vision for the future.
The announcement of BCCI’s centrally-contracted players for the 2023-24 season also saw the exclusion of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer. Both players were overlooked after failing to adhere to directives regarding participation in the Ranji Trophy. In contrast, skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli retained their positions in the top bracket of contracted players, highlighting their continued significance in Indian cricket.

He will be eager to not only top the run charts again but also guide the Royals to victory.
2. Aiden Markram, Sunrisers Eastern Cape
Aiden Markram, the skipper of Sunrisers Eastern Cape, showcased his batting prowess in the inaugural SA20 tournament, finishing as the third-highest run-scorer with 366 runs in 12 innings. Markram’s ability to lead from the front and his recent Test century against India underline his good form. Fans can expect him to continue his impactful performances in SA20 2024.

Hard-hitting left-hander Rilee Rossouw had a modest performance in SA20 2023, scoring 202 runs in 12 innings. Retained by Pretoria Capitals for SA20 2024, Rossouw will be determined to make amends. With the support of teammates like Theunis de Bruyn, Paul Stirling, Colin Ingram, and James Neesham, he will look to play a crucial role in bolstering the Capitals’ batting department.
4. Dewald Brevis, MI Cape Town

Jos Buttler, the captain of the England cricket team, has shouldered much of the blame for England’s disappointing performance in the World Cup. He acknowledges that his own batting form has been a significant concern during their failed campaign.
England’s fate was sealed with a 33-run defeat to Australia, marking their sixth loss in seven matches, leaving them with no chance of reaching the semi-finals. Buttler’s struggles continued as he was dismissed cheaply, contributing to a series of low scores in the tournament.
Buttler expressed his disappointment with his own performance, stating that his poor form with the bat has been a major setback for the team. He emphasized his determination to remain positive and not lose belief in himself.
England still has two matches remaining, against Netherlands and Pakistan, but their chances of progressing have dwindled dramatically. Their lack of confidence and inability to execute their game plan have been key factors in their poor showing.
Moeen Ali, who played a decent innings in the match against Australia, pointed out that the team’s lack of confidence has led to inconsistent and error-prone performances. He stressed the need for the team to regain belief and execute their plans effectively.
In summary, England’s World Cup campaign has been a far cry from their previous confident and successful white-ball cricket, with Buttler and the team struggling to find their form and confidence, resulting in a disappointing tournament. This could lead to ECB removing Jos Buttler as captain.
