IND vs AUS Test Series: 1983 World Cup winner Krishnamachari Srikkanth advises KL Rahul to take a break

KL Rahul’s lacklustre performance in white-ball cricket last year and in the ongoing Test series has left many questioning his place in the Indian cricket team.

    KL Rahul Flop Show

With just 38 runs in the first two games and a low average since 2020, former cricketers and fans alike are divided on whether Rahul should be given another chance or benched for the upcoming match against Indore.

Even 1983 World Cup winner Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who affectionately calls him “Rolls Royce Rahul,” believes it’s time for him to take a break and for Shubman Gill to take the field in the third match.

Srikkanth has added his voice to the ongoing debate about the struggling form of Indian cricketer KL Rahul.

Despite being a big fan of the talented batter, Srikkanth believes that Rahul needs to take a break from the game in order to regroup and recover his form.

The 30-year-old has had a difficult time in both white-ball and Test cricket over the past year, with an average of just 30 since 2020, which is the third-worst among Indian batters.

Srikkanth’s comments come amidst a heated debate among cricket experts and fans about Rahul’s place in the team, with many calling for rising star Shubman Gill to be given a chance in the upcoming Indore game.

‘I quietly went to toilet, shed a tear or two…’: Karthik revealed he went through a similar phase in his career as KL Rahul

KL Rahul is going through the worst phase of his international career. Dinesh Karthik, who has played a lot of cricket with Rahul, said he felt bad for the opener and also revealed that he has gone through similar phases in his career where he went to the washroom and shed a tear or two.

Karthik said if Rahul loses his place for the Indore Test starting March 1, it won’t be because of that one unlucky dismissal, it will be because of his poor form since the South Africa series last year. “He also knows for a fact that if he’s going to be dropped for the next match, which is pretty much an eventuality, it is not because of the one innings, it is because of what has transpired in the last five-six Test matches. He is a class player. He is very good in all formats. At this point, I don’t think it’s the technique, it’s what is happening between the ears. He might need some time away from the game. Come back fresh for the ODIs,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

Resonating with Rahul’s state, Karthik said, “This is a professional world, you’ve got to deal with those sorrowful moments but as a player when I look at what he has gone through. When you get out that way knowing very well this could have been your last innings. It has happened to me when you go into the dressing room, quietly walk into the toilet, and shed a tear or two. It’s not a nice feeling because there’s not much you can do.”

“Temporarily for the moment, I will have to go with Shubman Gill. He batted beautifully. There will be just one change in the India XI (for the third Test). I felt bad for KL Rahul. He has been under the scanner. But One thing is for sure, KL will come back strongly and when he does, there are not too many right-handed batters who can match him with the quality and range of shots,” DK concluded.

Venkatesh Prasad slams Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid for backing KL Rahul’s overseas performance

Venkatesh Prasad, a former India player, has responded to the comments made by Team India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, and captain, Rohit Sharma, regarding KL Rahul’s overseas performances in Test cricket.

    KL Rahul

The coach and captain had recently backed KL Rahul and highlighted the two centuries he scored in England and South Africa. However, Prasad has countered their remarks by stating that KL Rahul’s stats do not support the claim of him having an outstanding overseas Test record.

Prasad has gone on to mention other Indian openers such as Shikhar Dhawan, Mayank Agarwal, Shubhman Gill, and Ajinkya Rahane, highlighting their performances in away Test matches. He notes that while KL Rahul has scored six overseas centuries, he has followed them up with a string of low scores, bringing his average down to 30 in 56 innings.

Prasad suggests that KL Rahul needs to work on his form and performance in the remaining two test matches. If he is picked in the playing 11, then Indore might be his best chance of regaining his form and silencing critics. However, if he fails to do so, then he should consider playing county cricket and making a comeback in the Test side.

“He is scared of getting out…”: Mark Waugh slams KL Rahul after another failure

Australia great Mark Waugh slammed KL Rahul after the Indian vice-captain’s lean patch continued in the second Test in Delhi.

KL Rahul was out LBW for just 17 runs after failing to deal with a Nathan Lyon delivery on Day 2 of the 2nd Test.

“I think KL Rahul has just to back himself a little bit. He is scared of getting out. You cannot bat that way, you’ve got to be confident in your own ability. He is just restricting himself. I’d love to see him bat freely and not worry about getting out,” Mark Waugh said on Star Sports.

Sunil Gavaskar, on the other hand, said Rahul has a mental block and also pointed out the flaw in his technique.

“He doesn’t know whether to go back or come forward. With KL Rahul, he takes his front foot across and the ball is turning into you, you have to play with a straight bat but when you take your front foot across like that you are left with no choice but to play with an angled bat. The chances of you missing the ball are more. Rohit takes the front foot away, so he allows the bat to come around and play the ball in front of the pad. That’s why you see Rohit Sharma look so secure and why Rahul looks tentative,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
