In preparation for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, Cricket Australia has given Tim David his debut ODI opportunity, aiming to strengthen their middle order. With a convincing 111-run victory over South Africa on August 30, David’s impressive performance, including a fifty, has underlined his suitability for the fifty-over format.
Following his impressive 64-run contribution off 28 balls in the initial T20I match against South Africa, he earned his place in Australia’s ODI squad for the series on South African soil. While originally slated to join the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League after the ongoing T20 series, David will now extend his stay with the Australian team.
With a mere 16 List A matches under his belt, Tim David’s career showcases an astonishing average of 82.77 and a notable strike rate of 123.14. Intriguingly, his appearances for Australia are limited to one, while his participation in domestic matches spans across Singapore and Surrey.

The question lingers whether David can successfully make his mark in the Australian ODI squad, especially at this advanced stage. Yet, his inclusion does furnish the Australian selectors with an additional middle-order alternative. While the unveiling of Australia’s ODI World Cup squad and that of other nations is slated for the following week, alterations to the 15-player roster remain permissible until September 28.
Aussie selector Tony Dodemaide remarked, “Tim is already present for the T20 series, affording an opportunity to assess the applicability of his skills in the one-day format.”
