Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag recently shared a captivating story from the victorious 2011 World Cup campaign, shedding light on legendary captain MS Dhoni’s unique superstition. Sehwag revealed that throughout the tournament, Dhoni had a ritual of consuming only Khichdi, a traditional Indian dish.

Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, Team India triumphed in the ODI World Cup on home soil in 2011. They became the first host nation to clinch the coveted 50-over World Cup in men’s cricket, defeating the Sri Lankan team by six wickets in the final at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

During a discussion following the announcement of the Cricket World Cup 2023 fixtures in Mumbai, Virender Sehwag revealed that despite not finding runs with the bat, Dhoni stuck to his superstition of consuming Khichdi.

“Everyone had their own superstitions and followed them,” Sehwag remarked. “MS Dhoni had a superstition of having ‘khichdi’ throughout the World Cup. He used to say that even if I’m not scoring runs, but as long as this superstition is working and we are winning matches, I will continue with it.”

Dhoni’s adherence to his Khichdi ritual, despite his personal form, is a testament to the various superstitions and beliefs that players hold during high-pressure tournaments like the World Cup. It showcases the significance of psychological comfort and routines in the pursuit of success on the cricket field.
