Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, secured victory in the Asia Cup 2023, marking his second Asia Cup Title as captain in the tournament. In a thrilling match, India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets by playing just 37 deliveries and the best thing is that this achievement comes at a crucial time as India prepares to host the ODI World Cup.
Rohit’s performance in the Asia Cup was commendable, amassing 194 runs with an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 107.78, including three scores of 50 or more. Notably, he showcased patience in building his innings, a highlight of his runs in the tournament. During the event, he also crossed the milestone of 10,000 runs in ODIs.
In the Super 4 match against Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma set several records. He became the fastest opening batsman to reach 8,000 runs in ODI cricket and the second-fastest to achieve 10,000 runs in ODIs. Additionally, he surpassed Shahid Afridi’s record for the most sixes in Asia Cup tournaments, now holding 28.

Wasim Akram, former Pakistan cricket legend, expressed his confidence in Rohit Sharma’s captaincy for the upcoming ODI World Cup. He praised Rohit’s calm demeanor on the field and highlighted his extensive experience in cricket. Akram believes that Rohit is the ideal leader for India, given their talented and experienced squad, which he considers one of the best in world cricket.
“What I like about him as a skipper is that he is very calm on the field. In general, he’s a very experienced cricketer. He’s been playing cricket for so many years and he’s the right man to lead India to the World Cup with a super-talented side, with one of the most experienced, talented and, in fact, the best batch in world cricket,” Akram commented on Star Sports.
Akram also pointed out that Rohit Sharma has the support of players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, who can guide the younger talents in the team. He believes that everything is aligning well for the Indian team as they prepare for the World Cup. India will commence their World Cup campaign against Australia in Chennai on October 8.
