The inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) final on March 26 was a riveting contest between the Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. The Delhi Capitals won the toss and chose to bat first, but their innings was derailed in the middle overs by Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hayley Matthews.
Matthews’ spell was nothing short of phenomenal, as she took three wickets while bowling two maidens in her four-over spell. Her highlight of the day came in the 14th over when she took a stunning return catch to dismiss Jess Jonassen and dent the Delhi Capitals’ innings.

Despite the efforts of Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav, who put on a record-breaking 52-run partnership for the last wicket, the Delhi Capitals could only manage a total of 131/9.

In the chase, the Mumbai Indians lost both Matthews and Yastika Bhatia early, but they managed to chase down the target with three balls to spare, thanks to a crucial 41-run partnership between skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Anuja Patil.

Matthews reflected on her spell at the mid-innings break, stating that she was pretty excited and had an important role to play with the bat. Mumbai Indians fans will certainly be excited to see what she has in store in the future, after her dominant performance in the WPL 2023 final.
