‘What were you thinking when you play that shot’ Virender Sehwag Blasts Suryakumar Yadav

During a discussion in the post-match show, Sehwag emphasized that his approach was always to give his best on the field. He further suggested that Suryakumar Yadav might not need to work on his skills as much as he needs to focus on the mental aspects of the game.

Suryakumar Yadav, a key player, finally regained his form in ODI cricket by scoring 50 runs from 49 balls before getting out. Despite being part of India’s ODI World Cup squad, Surya had struggled to make a significant impact in the 50-over format while representing the Indian team.

However, the Mohali ODI on Friday showcased a different side of his performance. Interestingly, even after the match concluded, reports suggest that Surya continued to practice in the nets. When questioned about the mindset behind this dedication, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag revealed that it’s not a practice he personally followed.

During a discussion in the post-match show, Sehwag emphasized that his approach was always to give his best on the field. He further suggested that Suryakumar Yadav might not need to work on his skills as much as he needs to focus on the mental aspects of the game.

“I didn’t need to. When you go out there, you put your 100 percent effort. Sometimes, you get out and it’s fine. But for me, that was it. I wouldn’t practice until the next day. I don’t know the reasons why he was knocking after the game, but I believed that you prepared for this particular game, you had the chance, you made a mistake and got out. Focus on the mistake, the mindset is more important. The skills won’t go anywhere, you don’t need practice,” Sehwag said.

“It’s the mindset. What were you thinking when you play that shot, whether it was the right decision or not. The mental tuning is more important. You should’ve focussed on skills when you had those three ducks in a row. Now that you’ve scored runs, you have to tune yourself mentally,” Viru added.

Suryakumar Yadav’s spot in the Indian ODI team has faced scrutiny due to his inconsistent performances in the format. However, with the selectors choosing him for the ODI World Cup squad, he is likely determined to prove his worth and demonstrate his gratitude for the management’s trust.
