Rohit Sharma is 37 years old and there are rumours that he will retire from international cricket after the conclusion of ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is scheduled to be held in Pakistan. The current Indian captain is known for his funny demeanour on cricket field. Sharma was announced as captain for the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 by Jay Shah just before the IPL 2024. But the future of Rohit Sharma as captain is soon coming to end.
The age is not on Rohit’s side and therefore BCCI is definitely looking for a successor in all three formats of the game. Hardik Pandya has been named as the vice captain of India in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. He has also captained India in both the T20Is and ODIs when Rohit Sharma was unavailable. There were also rumours that Hardik Pandya would be the captain for the T20 World Cup 2024. But those rumours did not come true.
This does not mean that Pandya is not a captaincy prospect. Instead handing over the vice captaincy to Pandya suggests that he could be the next in line to become India’s captain. However, Hardik Pandya does not play the red ball cricket and therefore India would have to opt for split captaincy if he is made the captain in T20Is and ODIs.

BCCI has suggested in the past that it does not want to see two different captains for India in the white and red ball cricket. This could hamper the captaincy chances of Hardik Pandya.
Jasprit Bumrah is also another name that pops up when we talk about the captaincy of Indian Cricket Team. He has captained India in both white ball and Test cricket. Bumrah plays all three formats and since his return he has looked completely fit. But managing Bumrah’s workload is another factor that BCCI would consider before choosing him to be the captain of India.
For now it seems that either Pandya or Bumrah is going to be the next Indian captain. They could share the responsibilities with Pandya leading in white ball format and Bumrah in Test cricket.
