Ajinkya Rahane’s exceptional form in the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored 469 runs at a strike rate of 164.56, has made him a contender for Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) captaincy in IPL 2025. His experience, calm demeanor, and leadership during India’s 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy victory further enhance his credentials. However, appointing him captain might not align with KKR’s long-term goals.
Rahane’s IPL captaincy record is underwhelming, with just nine wins from 25 matches and a poor win percentage of 36%. His stint with Rajasthan Royals in 2019 was particularly disappointing, leading to his mid-season replacement. In a fast-paced tournament like the IPL, Rahane’s measured approach as captain has often fallen short.
At 36, Rahane would be among the oldest captains in IPL 2025, which raises concerns about his longevity and adaptability. KKR, fresh off a title-winning campaign under Shreyas Iyer, would risk disrupting their long-term plans by opting for a short-term solution in Rahane’s captaincy.
Another challenge is Rahane’s inconsistent IPL performances in recent seasons. While he excelled with CSK in 2023, his form in 2024 was lackluster. If his form dips in 2025, KKR might face the dilemma of playing an out-of-form captain, which could weaken their XI.

KKR has promising internal options in Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh. Both have been key to KKR’s success and offer long-term stability. Venkatesh, the vice-captain last season, and Rinku, a proven performer with leadership experience, are better-suited choices for the role.
While Rahane’s batting form and experience are undeniable, KKR should prioritize a younger leader who aligns with their future vision. Choosing Venkatesh or Rinku would provide continuity and stability, ensuring the team remains competitive in the years ahead.
