Women’s CWC 2022: Windies defeated Bangladesh by 4 Runs in Thriller

West Indies Women defeated Bangladesh Women in a last-over thriller by 4 runs at Bay Oval stadium in New Zealand.

West Indies Women defended 7 runs in the final over against the last Bangladeshi batting pair. Stafanie Taylor, the skipper for West Indies, found the gap between bat and pad of Fariha Trisna on the 3rd ball of the last over of Bangladeshi Innings to win the third match for her side at Women’s World Cup 2022.

West Indies have climbed up to the third position at the points table with three thrilling wins at the tournament, while Bangladesh sits awkwardly at 7th position with only one win in four matches so far.

Here’s how the match panned out

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bowl first. They performed exceptionally well with the ball to restrict West Indies Women at 140/9 in 50 overs.

Shemaine Campbelle played an innings of substance on a challenging track to somehow take West Indies to 140. She scored a vital unbeaten 53* runs for the Caribbeans. For Bangladesh, Salma Khatun and Nahida Akhter each took two wickets.

Chasing the total, Bangladesh never looked settled as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Nahida Akhter played a valuable knock of 25* not out, but it was not enough for Bangladesh to win the game. Hayley Mathews dismissed 4 of the Bangladesh batters to be crowned the player of the match. Afy Fletcher and Stafanie Taylor each picked up three wickets to deter the Bangladeshi innings.

What’s Next

West Indies Women will play their next match at Seddon Park, Hamilton, on 21st March against Pakistan Women, and will look to carry on their winning momentum. On the other hand, Bangladesh Women will face India at the same venue on 22nd March.
