Ricky Ponting, renowned commentator and former Australian skipper, hailed Ajinkya Rahane’s incredible IPL performance, emphasizing the batsman’s regained confidence. Ponting acknowledged that Rahane had been on the periphery of the Test team in recent years but noted that his impressive IPL display was instrumental in earning him a spot in the squad. He expressed confidence in Rahane’s ability to perform well in the upcoming Test match and admitted he would be pleasantly surprised if Rahane failed to score runs.

Reflecting on Rahane’s IPL success, Ponting mused on the intriguing phenomenon of IPL runs leading to Test match selections. He highlighted how Rahane’s confidence and exemplary IPL performances paved the way for his return to the Test squad. Ponting also observed that Rahane faced a greater challenge in excelling in T20 cricket than he does in performing well in the Test format.

Ponting emphasized that Rahane’s skills are better suited to Test cricket than T20s, underlining the batsman’s aptitude for the longest format of the game. He commended Rahane’s leadership qualities, particularly his pivotal role in India’s triumph in Australia during their previous series. Ponting’s analysis instills confidence in Rahane’s ability to make a significant impact in the upcoming Test match.

Switching gears, Ponting turned his attention to India’s potential team selection for the WTC final. He confidently predicted that the management would choose Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. Ponting highlighted Jadeja’s improved batting prowess, suggesting that he could occupy the No. 6 batting position. While acknowledging Ashwin’s superior skills as a Test bowler, Ponting emphasized Jadeja’s ability to secure the batting spot and provide an additional spin bowling option if the pitch starts favoring spinners on the later days of the match.

In terms of pitch conditions at The Oval, Ponting shared his insights. Historically, the Oval pitch has been renowned for its batting-friendly nature, offering minimal assistance to fast bowlers on the opening day. However, Ponting also recalled instances where the pitch turned significantly, particularly if it started dry. This insight provides a tantalizing prospect of spin playing a crucial role as the match progresses.
