As the cricketing world eagerly anticipates the ICC World Test Championship final, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt reflects on the extraordinary journey of India’s rising star, Shubman Gill, and highlights the significance of cricketing legends comparing him to the iconic Sachin Tendulkar.

Gill, at the young age of 23, has already carved a name for himself as one of India’s future superstars. His remarkable performances in 2023 have propelled him to new heights, including a stunning double century against New Zealand in an ODI, solidifying his status as a formidable talent.

In a recent interview, cricketing legend Wasim Akram drew parallels between bowling to Gill in T20 cricket and bowling to Tendulkar during the field restrictions in ODIs. Akram also described Gill as a potential superstar of the game, an accolade that fills the young Indian batsman with pride.

Responding to Akram’s praise, Salman Butt expressed his admiration, saying on his YouTube channel, “Wasim bhai has said that bowling to Gill is like bowling to Tendulkar. I think everyone has their own way of showering praises. A lot of big [former] cricketers compare youngsters with legendary players from a previous era because they can relate to it.”

Butt further emphasized the significance of Akram’s comments, highlighting Gill’s outstanding batting performances in recent months. The former Pakistan captain acknowledged Gill’s hard work and dedication, stating, “He has earned it. His batting has been outstanding in the last few months. He has been on top of his game and he is looking as the standout batter in the game at present.”

Wasim Akram, renowned for his exceptional bowling skills, lauded Gill’s batting prowess, noting that the young right-handed batsman possesses the ability to play proper cricketing shots, making it challenging for bowlers to dismiss him. Akram drew a parallel between bowling to Gill in T20s and bowling to Tendulkar in the early overs of ODIs when fielding restrictions apply, emphasizing the difficulty of the task.

Gill’s stellar performances were not confined to international cricket alone. He emerged as the highest run-scorer in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, representing the Gujarat Titans (GT). With an impressive tally of 890 runs in 17 matches at an average of 59.33, including three centuries and four fifties, Gill showcased his exceptional talent on the grand stage.

Having already represented India in 15 Tests, 24 ODIs, and six T20Is, Gill’s potential is undeniable. The cricketing world awaits his contributions in the upcoming World Test Championship final, where his talent and technique will be crucial for India’s success.
