In the realm of cricket, opinions and perspectives often collide, and one such collision has recently come to light with the outspoken views of former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh on the illustrious Ravichandran Ashwin. In a candid conversation with the Times of India, Yuvraj Singh provided a straightforward assessment of Ashwin’s suitability for limited-overs cricket, asserting that the veteran spinner “doesn’t deserve” a place in India’s T20I and ODI squads.

Yuvraj, a stalwart in the Indian cricketing legacy, acknowledged Ashwin’s proficiency in the Test arena but raised pertinent questions about his contributions with the bat and in the field, crucial aspects demanded by the dynamics of white-ball formats.

“Ashwin is a great bowler but I don’t think he deserves a place in ODIs and T20s. He is very good with the ball, but what does he bring with the bat? Or as a fielder? In the Test team, yes, he should be there. But in white-ball cricket, I don’t think he deserves a place,” Yuvraj candidly expressed.

The scrutiny on Ashwin’s limited-overs utility comes in the wake of his somewhat uneven performances in ODIs and T20Is, a contrast to his remarkable success in Test cricket. Yuvraj’s critique, although bold, is rooted in the practical demands of white-ball cricket, where all-round skills often play a decisive role.

Yuvraj Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin share a cricketing history, having been part of the Indian team that clinched the ODI World Cup in 2011. Despite the candid assessment, it’s important to note that Yuvraj has previously commended Ashwin’s resilience and contributions, particularly during challenging times such as Yuvraj’s battle with cancer.

In a poignant revelation on Ashwin’s YouTube channel, the spinner had acknowledged his shock upon learning about Yuvraj’s health struggles. “When it broke out (the news of Yuvraj having cancer), I was shocked because I did not expect somebody who had just become Player of the series, in fact like I would say, ‘Bharat ka Icon.’ That literally was it,” Ashwin had shared.
