Australia’s batting woes continued on the first day of the Nagpur Test, as they were bowled out for a mere 177. Meanwhile, India’s opener Rohit Sharma was batting on another level altogether, amassing an unbeaten half-century and leading India to a commanding 77-1 at the close of play.
Former Australia skipper Michael Clarke has predicted that India could potentially secure an innings victory if they manage to score close to 300 runs in the first innings. With a first-innings score of 300, India would lead by 123 runs, putting Australia in a precarious position.
While Australia’s bowlers were expected to put up a strong performance, they were met with Rohit’s dominance, as he smacked 13 runs off the first over from Pat Cummins. Clarke was critical of Cummins’ tactics on the field, stating that he was surprised by the lack of aggression in the bowler’s approach.
“You want the batter to try and take a risk and hit that one over the top,” said Clarke on the Big Sports Breakfast. “If India get 280 to 300, mate, they might not have to bat again.”
Clarke emphasized the importance of aggression in bowling, even when the score is not in the favor of the team. He stated: “I know they’ve only got 177 runs on the board, but you’ve still got to look to take wickets.”
India has lost the wicket of KL Rahul so far, but with nightwatchman Ravichandran Ashwin and the in-form Rohit at the crease, Australia’s prospects don’t look too bright. The visitors need to come up with a strong plan to make a comeback in this match and keep their hopes alive.
