With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy slipping away from their grasp, Australia is turning to former batter Matthew Hayden to help salvage their pride and reputation in India.
The Aussies are 0-2 down in the four-match Test series against the home team and are desperate to avoid a whitewash. Head coach Andrew McDonald believes that Hayden’s expertise in batting on Indian pitches can help the team come back from the brink.
Hayden, who accumulated over 1,000 runs in India during his playing career, had famously mocked the Australian team during a Test match in Delhi by bringing a broom to the stadium, urging the batsmen to play the sweep shot correctly.
McDonald is hoping that Hayden’s knowledge of Indian conditions and his experience as a batting consultant for Pakistan will help the team improve their performance in the remaining matches.
Hayden is currently in India as part of the Star Sports commentary panel and has worked with Pakistan as a batting consultant twice, helping them reach the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021 and the final in 2022.
