IPL 2023 | LSG vs GT: Tom Moody defends KL Rahul’s strike rate, says criticism is excessive

Former SRH Coach Tom Moody shares his opinion on the debate around LSG skipper's strike rate and impressed with Stoinis' game-changing spell in the LSG vs RR match.

Former Australian cricketer, Tom Moody, has weighed in on the debate surrounding the strike rate of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper, KL Rahul, in IPL 2023. Moody believes that Rahul is often unfairly criticized for his slow strike rate, and that he played a great knock in the recent game against Rajasthan Royals.

KL Rahul

Despite winning the match against Rajasthan Royals by 10 runs, LSG’s batting performance was lackluster. However, their bowlers put on an impressive display to defend their total of 154 runs. Despite the win, much of the focus was on Rahul’s strike rate, which has been a topic of concern for some time.

In six games so far, Rahul has scored 174 runs with an average of 32.33. However, he has been criticized for his strike rate of just 114.79, which many feel is too slow. Moody, however, thinks that the criticism is overblown and that Rahul played a great knock against Rajasthan Royals.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Moody said that Rahul assessed the conditions well and made the right decisions as captain. Moody was also impressed with Marcus Stoinis’ bowling, as the all-rounder picked up two crucial wickets and conceded only 28 runs in his first bowling spell of the tournament.

Moody praised Stoinis for his ability to bowl dead straight, which he said was critical on a surface that offered a little bit of inconsistency with its pace and bounce.

LSG’s next match will be against the Gujarat Titans on Saturday, 22nd April. While Rahul’s strike rate will likely remain a topic of discussion, Moody’s comments suggest that he believes the batter is being unfairly criticized. It remains to be seen whether Rahul can maintain his form and prove his critics wrong in the upcoming matches.
