Asia Cup 2023: Blow for Pakistan as Mohammad Hafeez Declines Chief Selector’s Role

PCB faces challenges in appointing a new chief selector ahead of the upcoming tournaments.

Former Pakistan captain, Mohammad Hafeez, has reportedly turned down the offer to become Pakistan’s chief selector for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. Recent reports suggested that Hafeez was the front-runner for the position.

Asia Cup 2023: Blow for Pakistan as Mohammad Hafeez Declines Chief Selector's Role

Earlier this year in January, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), under the leadership of Najam Sethi, appointed Haroon Rasheed as the chief selector, replacing former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, who served as the interim chief selector.

However, Rasheed has been removed from the post by the new PCB leadership under President Zaka Ashraf. In search of a new chief selector, the PCB recently approached Mohammad Hafeez and Rashid Latif for the role. While Ashraf reportedly preferred Hafeez, the former cricketer declined the offer.

According to Cricket Pakistan, Hafeez has decided not to take up the role and expressed his desire to work at the grassroots level instead. This decision comes as a major blow to PCB, especially with the Asia Cup and World Cup drawing near. The PCB had hoped to appoint the chief selector promptly, but with Hafeez declining, the search will now be extended.

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter, Moin Khan, was also considered for the position, but he is reluctant to accept the proposal due to concerns over his son Azam Khan’s cricket career. Moin is worried that his son’s performance may be affected by unnecessary pressure if he takes up the role of chief selector.
