In a significant update following the conclusion of the third ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially announced its 15-member squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup in 2023. Notably, veteran opening batsman Tamim Iqbal has been left out of the squad due to concerns regarding his persistent back injury. Tamim, a stalwart in the Bangladesh national team for years, had proactively informed the selectors about his ongoing back issues a few days ago, emphasizing the need to assess his fitness before finalizing the World Cup squad.
Tamim made a comeback to international cricket in the second ODI against New Zealand on September 23, scoring 44 runs, reversing his earlier decision to retire from international cricket in July. However, despite his efforts, he continued to experience discomfort in his back during the match. In light of his enduring discomfort and with a focus on his long-term well-being, the medical team decided to rest Tamim, along with several other players, for the third ODI against New Zealand, which Bangladesh lost by 7 wickets.
Shakib Al Hasan, the experienced all-rounder, will continue to captain the Bangladesh ODI squad for the World Cup. The squad features several familiar names, offering a mix of experience and emerging talent. Notable players in the lineup include Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, and Mustafizur Rahman.
