Rohit Sharma Confirms Ashwin to Replace Axar Patel in ODI World Cup

Rohit Sharma, hinted that R Ashwin might be considered as a backup option for the ODI World Cup 2023.

On September 26, India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, hinted that R Ashwin might be considered as a backup option for the ODI World Cup 2023, applauding the off-spinner’s return to ODI cricket during the ongoing 3-match series against Australia.

Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli and Kuldeep Yadav, made their return to the side for the series finale after being rested for the first two ODIs against Australia. During a press conference before the match in Rajkot, Rohit Sharma expressed confidence in India’s preparations for the World Cup and the readiness of their backup players.

To provide opportunities, India rested Rohit, Kohli, Kuldeep, and Hardik for the first two ODIs, allowing players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and R Ashwin to showcase their skills against Australia. Ashwin’s return to the ODI setup came after Axar Patel, a spin-bowling all-rounder, suffered a left quadriceps strain during the Asia Cup, forcing him out of the final match against Sri Lanka.

Rohit confirmed that Axar Patel was unavailable for the 3rd ODI as he continues to recover from the injury. It’s worth noting that the selection committee included him in the extended 17-man squad for the 3rd ODI, pending his fitness.

In the first ODI against Australia, Ashwin claimed a wicket while conceding only 47 runs in Mohali. He further showcased his skills in the 2nd ODI in Indore, taking 3 crucial wickets on a high-scoring pitch. Ashwin demonstrated his variety and control, dismissing David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, and Josh Inglis. His exceptional spin-bowling performance indicated his readiness for the World Cup if required.

Rohit Sharma also confirmed that India had only 13 players available for selection in the 3rd ODI in Rajkot. This was due to the resting or release of players such as Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami, and Axar Patel for personal reasons.
